Study reveals women are more productive when the temperature is higher

Study reveals women are more productive when the temperature is higherStudy reveals women are more productive when the temperature is higherIf youre familiar with the constant workplace struggle of women complaining its too cold and men complaining its too hot (albeit not every woman and every man), your office most likely struggles with the battle of the thermostat. But as it turns out, both women and men have a more valid argument than just wanting to be comfortable, according to a study published May 22 by Tom Chang and Agne Kajackaite from the USC Marshall School of Business, Los Angeles, USA, and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, in Berlin, Germany.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe study indicated that temperature actually has an effect on cognitive performance and productivity, and these effects vary based on gender. Authors wrote that ordinary variations in room temp erature can affect cognitive performance significantly and differently for men and women.Women performed better on math and verbal tests when it was hotterChang and Kajakaite had 543 German students take logic, math, and verbal tests in a room that was either cooled or heated to a range of temperatures between 61and 91 degrees Fahrenheit. These students were getting paid based on the number of answers they answered correctly, so you know they were trying their very best. The results showed that female students generally performed better on math and verbal tests when the room was at the warmer end of the spectrum. At higher temperatures, women both attempted to solve andactually succeeded in solving correctly more math and verbal tasks than at lower temperatures.Men perform better on math and verbal tests at lower temperaturesIn contrast to female students, male students performed better on the math and verbal tests when the room was set to a lower temperature. Not only did male stude nts submit fewer correct responses when the room was warmer, but actually submitted fewer responses in general.Perhaps the most interesting observation is that the increase in scores in women participants in response to higher temperatures is significantly larger than the decrease in the male students performance. So does this mean that women in the office now have the more valid argument?Room temperature did not impact logic test scoresLogic test scores were not impacted by the temperature of the room for either male or female students, only math and verbal. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Life Integration

Life Integration Welcome to the Age of Work/Life Integration Theres definitely a call to action here, said Dan Schawbel, managing partner of Millenial Branding, a research and consulting firm that specializes in Generation Ys role in the working world. This is a pretty serious topic. But while Schawbel pointed out that social media is no longer about just having fun and posting whatever you want online, he was also quick to acknowledge some benefits the shifting social media landscape may have for employers and job seekers alike.I think were moving toward an interesting time, Schawbel said.Check the BrandEver since the rise of social recruiting, people have been quick to throw around the term personal brand without thinking much about what it means. As it turns out, the concept of personal branding arose even before the dawn of social media. Many point to management expert Tom Peters 1997 article in Fast Company, A Brand Called You, as the beginning of the personal branding craze, and it is likely that the idea itself is even older. But if people are going to use the term so frequently, its best that everyone operate with the same definition in mind. Schawbel, an expert on personal branding in the contemporary world, defines the concept as this At the core of it, its the same marketing strategies that corporations and products have built over time applied to an individual. While it used to be that people needed money to market themselves the way that companies do, social media has democratized the field by making the tools of marketing much cheaper. Because email marketing, social networking, video technology, and other strategies cost little to elendhing unterstellung days, anyone can put the effort in, put content out there, and, as Schawbel puts it, be known for something to someone.Much of the conversation around personal brands revolves around landing jobs. As the received wisdom goes, a strong personal brand impresses recruiters and gets job seekers hire d. According to Schawbel, this is not the right approach to take If youre only thinking about your personal brand in the context of getting a single job, you dont really understand how the economy works or how careers are managed in the 21st century.Schawbel said that personal brands need to be about making longterm investments in yourself If you think about, What is the one skill or the one topic that I can be the best in? as it relates to adding value to companies or to people, and you really invest in it seven days a week, and you put your time in, then you could become known as that type of expert and then you have something that you can leverage over the longterm, which would be much more profitable for you. When Schawbel talks about profit, hes not only referring to the size of ones paycheck. Hes also talking about meaningfulness and happiness in ones life. Its important to notice the way in which Schawbel talks about personal and professional profitability as if they were two parts of the same whole, because his language is representative of the biggest shift occurring in the working world today the move from work/life balance to work/life integration.Work/Life Balance Is Over Work/Life Integration Is the New NormWork/life balance made sense when there was separation between what you did personally and professionally, said Schawbel. Technology has pushed our personal and professional lives together. This is not a general observation - its based on empirical research. Harris Interactive found that 91 percent of Americans perform work-related tasks on their personal time. Conversely, Salary.com found that 64 percent of employees visit non-work related web sites every day during work hours, including social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Thanks to technology, the lines between work and play - between home and office - are totally blurred, if not completely nonexistent. This is what Schawbel means when he refers to work/life integration work and life are no longer firmly divided. They mix together all the time.Schawbel is optimistic about this change, because it means that we may begin approaching the workday differently. It will no longer be about completing work in a certain allotment of time (e.g., the stereotypical 9-5 workday), but merely about employees getting work done when it needs to get done.Schawbel explained that, in some ways, this work/life integration is empowering for employees, because it allows them to juggle their work and personal lives according to their own preferences and schedules. So, its not letting the company manage those preferences, he said. Its you managing those preferences.Everyone is different, and work/life integration allows people to work and live according to their own schedules and preferences. Employers benefit, too, because the work they need is still getting done. While work/life integration isnt a total reality yet, Schawbel believes were well on our way. Its definitely h eaded in that direction, with telecommuting, where companies make money with less office space and individuals have more flexibility, he said.Work/Life Integration on the WebThe old social media advice for jobseekers used to be, Keep personal and professional activities totally separate. But Schawbel believes that advice no longer holds up. Its getting a lot harder to do that, and eventually it will become impossible, he said.Thats because work/life integration is happening online, in employees social media profiles, as well as in their offline lives. I think people need to brace themselves now and really think about what theyre putting on their profiles, regardless of whether its personal or professional, said Schawbel. People are not going to be able to manage 20 personal profiles and 15 professional profiles. Its just not going to happen. When social networking was limited to two or three sites, the personal/professional divide was a little easier to manage maybe you had a Faceboo k for personal life and a LinkedIn for work. But as TechCrunch columnist and Google Ventures general partner MG Siegler pointed out in January, the age of the big, all-encompassing social network is ending. The Web now belongs to specialized, single-purpose social media platforms people post photos to Instagram they share links and short bursts of text via Twitter they publish long-form content on Tumblr and Medium they send messages on WhatsApp. The list goes on, as niche social sites continue to proliferate.Schawbel foresees people using fewer profiles, combining their personal and professional lives online. This change has a huge impact, he said. It offers both new opportunities and new challenges. On the one hand, the melding of personal and professional will offer new possibilities for professional connections. If youre marketing, youre probably not going to connect online with someone in accounting. But, if you both like the New England Patriots, thats your connection point, sa id Schawbel. On the other hand, people will need to think differently about what they post. A blurring between personal and professional lives does not mean that everything is suddenly fair game. Schawbel pointed out that about 10 percent of Millenial Facebook users have lost out on job offers because of their social media activity. As personal and professional profiles merge, people will need to be extra careful if inappropriate personal profile activity could negatively impact employment, imagine what could happen when that inappropriate activity occurs on a partly professional profile. What Does This All Mean for Recruiters?Social has already proven itself integral to contemporary recruiting, but Schawbel predicts that work/life integration will only serve to make social media even more important to the hiring process. This is because profiles that combine both personal and professional details will not only give recruiters insight into candidates skills, but also insight into cand idates personalities, allowing recruiters to more accurately determine whether or not a candidate would be a good match for a companys culture. With access to more personal data, recruiters can make smarter hires and decrease the chance of hiring the wrong candidate. Thats a risk that recruiters would do well to mitigate, because hiring the wrong person is an exceedingly costly mistake according to a study conducted by the Society for Human Resources Management, replacing a bad hire could cost up to five times that hires annual salary.Work/life integration is just going to add more weight to social profiles, because basically a company is trying to hire for cultural fit. Looking at these social networks, where people present personal data, gives people an insight into, Will this person fit in with the company or not? Schawbel explained.Recruiters and job seekers alike should see work/life integration as a blessing it gives job seekers a chance to show off their personalities as well as their skill sets, and it gives recruiters a better method for determining cultural fit a crucial, but often frustratingly vague, component of the hiring process.

How to Become an Economic Development Director

How to Become an Economic Development DirectorHow to Become an Economic Development DirectorCities always seek to expand and diversify their tax bases. A new business opening or an existingbusiness expanding are beneficial to the local economy. These events bring additional tax revenue and provide citizens with new employment opportunities. When a city has only one major employer in town, and that employers industry is struggling, that has major implications for the city government. To avoid such a situation, economic development directors work to strengthen their local economy and diversify their cities tax bases. They recruit new businesses, retain existing ones, and assist businesses when they can expand operations locally. Hiring Process Economic development directors are hired through the normal government hiring process. Depending on a citys size, the economic development director may report to the city manager or an assistant city manager. Other city directors and local bu siness leaders may serve on an bewerbungsinterview panel when the city fills a vacancy. Qualifications Cities generally require economic development directors to hold a bachelors degree in economic development, urban planning, marketing, business administration or public administration. Economic development experience is also required. An individual cannot realistically expect to hold a director level position without significant experience in that directorships field. Supervisory experience is likely required if the position supervises staff, but even if the position does not, supervisory experience is helpful when relating to business owners and upper-level managers. Private sector experience is also useful Because so much of the job revolves around building relationships with business leaders, being able to swap stories about past business experiences can go a long way in developing those relationships. Private sector experience will also help win the trust of business leader s who have little tolerance for bureaucrats. Roles and Responsibilities Economic development directors have a strategic focus. They administer economic development programs for a city. While they verstndigung im strafverfahren with individual businesses in individual situations, they maintain a macro-level perspective on the citys economy. Economic development directors study market trends and apply their expert judgment to opportunities and threats facing the local economy. The economic development director advises the city manager and council on emerging and existing economic development issues. The director may also present to local civic and business groups on proposed economic development agreements. To ensure that businesses are treated fairly, economic development directors write city policy governing how tax and other incentives will be awarded to businesses. These policies dictate what sort of economic impact must be reasonably expected in order for businesses to qualif y for particular incentives. Economic development policies are ultimately approved by the city council. Deviations from policy are also brought to the city council for approval. Economic Growth Cities are proud of their mom-and-pop businesses, but when it comes to economic development, cities mostly concern themselves with established corporations who can provide substantial job opportunities to existing and new residents. Hundreds of new jobs mean new housing construction, more retail establishments and more city revenue. Economic development directors must focus their time on businesses that provide significant economic impact. Economic development directors maintain an inventory of available properties for businesses to occupy including retail space, industrial space, and open land. They try to match businesses to available space so that business owners can picture their businesses opening in, moving to or expanding in that city. In addition to bringing in new businesses, eco nomic development directors look to strengthen the businesses already located in the city. They persuade businesses to remain where they are and expand operations when appropriate. Losing an existing business is worse than having a new business choose to locate elsewhere. Missing out on a new business means no economic impact. Losing an existing business means adverse economic impact. Earning Potential Like other city director positions, the salary for an economic development director depends on the size of the city and the size of the economic development department staff. The bigger the city, the larger the economic development directors salary. Similarly, the more people a director has under his or her line of supervision, the higher that directors salary tends to be.

5 Key Parts of Your Return to Work After a Long Break

5 Key Parts of Your Return to Work After a Long Break5 Key Parts of Your Return to Work After a Long BreakReady to return to work after a long break out of the job market after raising kids or a similarly lengthy absence? Dont let the prospect overwhelm you. Gather your confidence (and a new interview outfit) and let the following five important steps set you up for success. Here are five tips to help you return to work after a long break or lengthy absence 1. Determine what you want out of your career. Before setting sights on picking up your career where it left off, be sure such an action fits your current objectives. Personal goals and priorities may have shifted during your time away. Maybe traveling for work no longer fits your lifestyle, or perhaps companies offering flex work look more attractive now than in the past. Even your interests or perceptions of meaningful work may be different than when you left, so honestly evaluate whether a tweak or a complete career change might be in order. 2. Evaluate your skills.Whether returning to your same industry or contemplating a new one, take stock of what you have to offer employers right now. While education and past experiences certainly shape your candidacy, you cant rely solely on past accomplishments. Examine relevant job ads and talk to people in your field to see what hiring managers find attractive. Update qualifications through classes or new certifications as necessary to improve marketability.3. Revamp your resume.Dont expect simply to dust off your old resume and be ready to go. Besides spending time creating an error-free, attention-grabbing document, be aware of the need to make what you submit compatible with applicant tracking systems (ATS). Using appropriate keywords and formats can be vital to getting a resume past an automated scanner and looked at by human eyes.4. Create a positive online presence.Recruiters and potential employers undoubtedly will try to learn more about you through social m edia and other online sources, so let them discover something great. Develop your reputation through guest blogs, thoughtful contributions to groups, and perhaps your own website. Lizandra Vega, author ofThe Image of Successand blogger atThe Career Confidante, suggests creating a LinkedIn profile that aligns with your resume and includes a profile photo without your kids or significant other. Employers are not legally allowed to ask about status, so displaying this on your profile is opening yourself up for discrimination. Clients can make inferences such as maybe you cant stay late because you have to take care of children or maybe you dont need to work too hard because youre in a dual-income household. Keep your profile professional and clean. Also, search on your name to see what else might be discovered. If results prove questionable, such as yielding what you thought were private pictures from your beach vacation, adjust privacy settings or see about getting things removed.5. Ma ke networking a priority. Finally, dont be shy about letting others know youre back on the job market. Start with past coworkers and other professional connections, but also bring up the subject with friends, neighbors, and acquaintances from volunteer work and social groups. And if you find your network lacking, seek new opportunities, such as attending an industry conference or going to your alma maters Homecoming celebration. Data Entry JobsSalaries and Skills Required

Data Entry JobsSalaries and Skills RequiredData Entry Jobs- Salaries and Skills RequiredData entry is one of those jobs thats pretty much what it sounds like- the entry of clear and concise data into one or more platforms so that its easily accessible and understandable to others. Those others might be humans or computer systems. Pay for data entry from home can range considerably, from as little as $1 per hour up to the average rate for an office-based data entry operator- about $15 an hour as of 2017. Its an organizational process, moving information from one format into another, and youd be hard-pressed to find a business or organization that doesnt need to consolidate and organize its relevant data. The position is sometimes referred to as a data entry clerk or a keyer. Skills Required A data entry clerk should be a skilled typist and is typically required to pass a keyboarding test prior to being hired. He should also be able to interpret and understand multiple sources of d ata, from scribblings on paper to website responses. The job might include verbal transactions and entering data from recordings. He should also be familiar enough with the type of data hes working with that he can plektrum up on inconsistencies and other issues. Some data entry work can require additional skills and responsibilities, such as verifying data or editing, and these jobs typically pay more. The rate will be higher if its paid on a per-piece basis, but it will take more time to perform, so the overall pay could be less for someone who is not as skilled. Education Requirements Data entry clerks typically do not need postsecondary education or degrees. A high school diploma or GED is satisfactory, although some community colleges and vocational schools do offer certificate programs in this field. Holding a certificate might not be necessary, but it will look good on a resume and set you a step or two ahead of other candidates for a position. The Effect of Experience Job duties can vary somewhat depending on the level of experience. New data entry clerks might only be expected to enter accurate data as quickly as possible. Volume is often as much of a goal as precision. More experienced data entry clerks might be expected to interpret and channel recorded information to the proper supervisor or department, and even oversee other clerks, all while maintaining lightning speed with their own workloads. Data Entry Salary Information Data entry salary information can vary considerably based on a lot of different factors, including your position as an employee or an independent contractor, the difficulty and skill level required by the position, and the speed at which you can do the job. But overall, data entry jobs generally pay modest wages. Any organization that promises big salaries for data entry jobs is more than likely a data entry scam. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), data entry keyers- not transcriptionists or typists - are paid a mean hourly wage of nearly $15.64 an hour as of mid-2017, from a low of $10.37 an hour for new hires up to $22.24 an hour for a more experienced worker employed by a generous company. This works out to about $32,530 annually, but salaries can depend heavily on the area where you work and live. Five states are known for ample data entry jobs as well as paying a decent wage, according to the BLS California, Texas, Illinois, New York, and Florida. unterstellung wage figures apply to employment jobs in brick-and-mortar offices, not necessarily data entry from home. And most work-at-home data entry jobs are not employment positions but independent contracting. Data Entry Pay Structures Data entry pays using a variety of rate structures, including an hourly rate, per-piece payment, keystrokes per hour, or keystrokes per minute. The job might also pay per work or per audio minute. Of course, no jobs will advertise $1-per-hour work, but complicated per-piece pay structures can actually work out to be that little. These other pay structures are designed to pay more to faster, more experienced data entry operators. But a worker must earnat least the minimum wage in the state in which the work is performed in employment positions in the U.S. that pay in any structure other than an hourly wage. Transcription jobs are sometimes advertised as data entry. These jobs can sometimes require more skill and accuracy so theyll pay more than simple data entry keying jobs. Work-at-Home vs. Office Data Entry Job Salaries Data entry jobs from home are likely to pay less than data entry in an office. Its not simply a matter of home-based workers often being willing to earn less in exchange for working from home. Data entry from home is almost always performed by independent contractors who arent subject to minimum wage laws. These jobs might be in competition with other global jobs from home or micro labor positions, which can also lower pay rates. The way in which data entry work is sent to home-based workers can also affect pay. Workers who log on to crowdsourcing or micro labor sites might not be able to obtain enough pieces of work in an hour to make a good wage. Job Growth Significant job growth isnt expected in this field due to advancements in technology that in many respects are replacing human fingers. Additionally, many companies are beginning to offshore these duties, farming them out to remote, third-party companies in countries where labor is cheaper. Job growth in the U.S. is expected to drop by about 2 percent in the decade from 2016 to 2026.
